Established National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Day in the Republic of North Macedonia

Today, on 24.02.2020, in Skopje, the Agency for Real Estate Cadaster of the Republic of North Macedonia, before the expert and professional public, as well as before around twenty institutions comprising the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), and before guests from the country and from Sweden, promoted 24th February as the NSDI Day inthe Republic of North Macedonia.

The functioning of the NSDI is regulated with the Law on National Spatial Data Infrastructure. This Law has been harmonized with the European Directive no. 2007/2/EC (INSPIRE). It constitutes a collection of metadata, sets of spatial data and services for spatial data, technologies, agreements for exchange, access and use, mechanisms, processes and procedures for coordination and monitoring.

The Agency for Real Estate Cadaster is in charge of establishing and maintaining the access to the NSDI geoportal, as well as for maintaining the metadata services, administering the register of metadata, and the training for the same.

Within the National geoportal, all members of the NSDI Council that have spatial data available to them are obliged to publish the metadata, sets of spatial data and the services for spatial data. The publishing of metadata, sets of spatial data and the services for spatial data shall be performed in in accordance with the national and European – INSPIRE accepted standards.

The Director of the Agency for Real Estate Cadasterofthe Republic of North Macedonia, Mr. Boris Tundzev, MSc, opened the event and pointed out: “Geospatial data are part of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Agenda until 2030, and it calls for globally coordinated activities in the process of collecting and integrating the new data. The role of this data is constantly rising, because the data enable us to lower the risks of disasters and to strengthen the access to platforms with geospatial data.

24th February is going to be NSDI Day in North Macedonia. On this day, we are going to share the achievements, but also have serious debates about the needs for further growth and promotion of the NSDI”, added Mr. Tundzev, thus declaring that the NSDI Day is going to become a tradition in our country.

The intention of the declaration of this NSDI Day is that every year, on this date, the NSDI entities and stakeholders are going to have the opportunity to gather and discuss the current topics related to the NSDI, to present the achieved results, and to jointly tackle and resolve any detected weaknesses.
